Every Sunday the exhibit hall is open for visitors, and it features a number of live animal exhibits and other activities. Memorial Park as a whole is 72 acres, with numerous recreational opportunities such as picnic tables, a swimming pool, and nature trails. The zoo that is located within the grounds contains a number of animal species, including river otter, American alligator, golden eagles, and bobcats. This is truly an outdoor attraction that is not to be missed.
Founders Memorial Garden
Located on the campus of the University of Georgia, the Founders Memorial Garden is truly a delightful outdoor attraction. The purpose of the garden is to remember the twelve founders of the first American Garden Club, and the gardens include a historic home (listed on the National Registry of Historic Places,) as well as over two acres of gardens, including a formal boxwood garden, two courtyards, a terrace, and much more. This is truly an Athens attraction that is not to be missed.
Horticulture Trial Garden
For those particularly interested in all manner of plants, the Horticulture Trial Gardens at the University of Georgia are a must-see outdoor attraction. Although the primary purpose of the gardens is to explore and introduce new forms of various plants and flowers, they do also visitors an opportunity to stroll through the garden and enjoy the marvelous variety of plants that are grown here.
North Oconee River Greenway & Heritage Trial
For those who want to get in a little outdoor exercise during their visit to Athens, a visit to the North Oconee River Greenway is a definite must see. The greenway is over three miles long, and offers many opportunities for both walking and biking. Those who walk along the park get a unique look at the thriving city of Athens, as the trail connects a variety of neighborhoods and points of interest. As part of the greater greenway, the Heritage Trail provides a number of explanatory panels that detail the rich and layered history of the city of Athens.
Sandy Creek Nature Center/Ensat Center
If outdoor exploration is on the agenda, look no further than the Sandy Creek Nature Center. There are over 225 acres of woodland for curious adventurers to explore, and over four miles of trails are available. For those who may not be quite that adventurous, the Nature Center also houses the ENSAT Interpretive Center, which houses reptiles and amphibians, marine and freshwater aquariums, and a number of other exhibits that make this a truly fascinating Athens attraction.
