Small Lake Town in Rabun County Provides Weekend Getaways

Rabun County is home to Clayton, Georgia; a picturesque mountain town that is at the base of the Appalachians and bordered by North and South Carolina.

With easy access to Atlanta, Clayton is a mountain town get away for most busy professionals in Atlanta. Clayton is surrounded by lakes and waterfalls, as well as cultural artists that make typical Appalachian art, and is easy access to Asheville, North Carolina.

Rabun County Lakes and Parks

Nestled away in the green woods surrounding Clayton are Tallulah Falls State Park, Moccasin Creek State Park, and Black Rock Mountain State Park. Lake Burton, Lake Seed, Lake Rabun, Lake Tallulah, and Lake Tugalo surround the town with opportunities to fish and boat. Hiking trails and mountain biking trails are easily accessible. There are also plenty of places to canoe or golf.

Cultural Art Galleries and Artisans

Clayton and the surrounding Rabun towns are home to North Georgia Arts Guild, The Georgia Heritage Center for the Arts, Old Dillard School, RGNS Rearden Theatre, and the Hambidge Center. Classes and exhibits are held by local artists on a regular basis. Dwayne Thompson has lived and worked in Clayton all of his life and still prides himself with his hand-made, rugged, high-quality furniture found in cabins across the region. Visit him at the Timpson Creek Gallery and step into the workshop. The gallery has a workshop, an art gallery, antiques and during the summer it hosts a local market with fresh fruits and vegetables sold by a local farm owner, Karen McCracken of Farm Fare.

Local Wineries and Farms

Other wineries and farms are also in the area including Persimmon Creek Vineyards. Tiger Mountain Vineyards is in Tiger which is a stone’s throw from Clayton. For interests in agri-tourism, visit Hillside Orchard Farms, Osage Farms, or Simply Homegrown at the downtown market, when it’s in season. All of these farms are easily accessible so that produce and wine can be bought on the way to the lake house so that dinner can be made fresh.

Horseback Riding in the Mountains

The Dillard House is up the road from Clayton and has home-cooked food brewing in the kitchen and steady horses tied at the barn waiting on the opportunity to provide a hearty dinner after a long trail ride in the mountains. There is no better way to enjoy the mountains than upon the back of a horse, riding along the creek beds, and listening to the birds.

Clayton, Georgia in the middle of Rabun County is a quiet mountain town with plenty of zest. Visit Clayton this spring and summer and enjoy the Appalachians from a perspective that is delightful and sweet.
