Earl Smith Strand Theatre: Marietta’s Restored Lyric Theatre

Standing as a beacon in historic Marietta Square, the newly restored Earl Smith Strand Theatre is poised to, once again, offer audiences films and live entertainment.

Originally built in 1935 as an art deco movie house, the Strand Theatre was the premier theatre in Cobb. As newer movie houses moved in, business began to suffer and the doors to the Strand eventually closed in 1976. After a few unsuccessful ventures, the Strand Theatre became vacant and its owners, the Goldstein family, looked to tear it down in favor of a high-rise building.

Luckily, the tear-down never took shape, but a plan to save it did. A newly formed committee, called the Friends of the Strand, along with former Cobb Commissioner Chairman Earl Smith, began plans in 2003 to resurrect the Strand to its original glory.

The venue was then leased to Smith for 50 years from the Goldstein family and a $4 million restoration began. The next five years brought about demolition, construction and fundraiser campaigns. The theatre was then reopened to the public in December 2008.

The Earl Smith Strand Theater, which was named in honor of the Cobb Commissioner who helped to spearhead the theatre’s restoration, is now a lively, vintage venue for films, live entertainment and corporate and private events. In addition to serving as a 500-seat auditorium, it is available to arts organizations, business organizations and individuals.

The Event Rooms of the Strand include:

  • Top Level Event Room – This room boasts coffered ceilings, a teardrop chandelier and large windows overlooking Marietta Square. The windows feature transoms with decorative etching which is a replica of the transom etchings which were seen in the Strand when it was first constructed.  This room can accommodate 60 to 80 guests and up to 115 guests for a cocktail party.
  • Cobb Terrace – This room serves as the Strand’s premier, top-level event space. It opens to an open-air terrace which overlooks the Square and showcases stunning views of Kennesaw Mountain. This room can accommodate 60 to 80 guests and up to 115 guests for a cocktail party.
  • Second Floor Event Room – This room features six, oversized windows, cherry floors, coffered ceilings and three chandeliers which were rescued from an historical hotel in Atlanta. It is also adjacent to the Fine Art Gallery, which features works by local artists.
