History

British immigrants Thomas Snell and James Sawyer were the first settlers of the Cates District in southeast Gwinnett County. The partners opened the Snell and Sawyer Dry Goods Store in a community they called New London. Residents began to call the new town Snellville, and by 1882, the name stuck.

The Snellville Post Office opened in 1885, with Sawyer as the first postmaster. Eventually, Snell and Sawyer’s partnership dissolved, and each man opened his own mercantile. Today, Sawyer is only remembered by a select few historians, while Snell’s name lives on in the town he co-founded.
